If you bend a long flexible object like a sheer plank around a center form it takes on a fine ended curve which I believe is a hyperbola. I use that method when building my canoes, rather than make a whole lot of forms I only need one. If you measure the slope (tangent) of the diagonal from the edge of the form to the stem, multiply by 1.5 you get the slope of the half-angle at the stem. I find this usefule as I know what angle to plane the stem at.
