Bill, actually the term 'proa' applies to outrigger sailboats that shunt, or reverse direction (the bow becomes the stern), when going upwind. The outriggers on proa stay upwind all the time.

You might enjoy reading the book linked below on building outrigger sailing canoes. The author is Gary Dierking, who is also the guy building the boat in my photo.
