In Response To: S&G: Repairing a broken nose (Robert Ruderman)

: Hi,

: Through an accident yesterday, a swell picked up my kayak and tossed my Pygmy
: Coho, bow first, into a metal buoy. The result is that impact with the
: buoy ripped off about a 1/2 inch of the pointed nose (where the deck meets
: the bow) of the kayak. The buoy, of course, was no worse for the enounter.

: So...any suggestions on how should I proceed with the repair?

: All I can think of is to...

: - sand down the area and a little beyond the damaged area
: - using wood flour + epoxy build a new nose/point (as if rebuilding the shape
: with putty)
: - fiberglass over the point;
: - varnish

: I realize that the kayak will never look the same, but then this is not a
: coffee table...

: Many thanks for any ideas and suggestions.

: Robert

You could plane down the bow stem, apply an external strip - but you'd probably want to do the stern, as well.
