Len, I applaud your creative solution! With a cloth/epoxy coating it should do nicely.
I've had my share of coaming lip strips breaking, too. Generally, I cut them less than 1/8" (1mm) thick. Often I wet them and SLOWLY bend them into shape, let them dry and glue the next day.
Looking forward to seeing the finished boat.
