: Thanks Bryan,

: I use sandpaper on glass now, and will use it for lapping new
: blades and rough dressing.

Makes sense to me.

: As for the better deal on Amazon,
: why'd ya have to tell me that??? I don't want to know these
: things AFTER I spent the money!!!

It was more for other people; I wasn't trying to rub your nose in it.

: Anyway, I'm happy, and the
: company had great communication with me after the sale. Also a
: lot of places will not ship to the island and these guys did for
: free, so I'm happy.

That's good to know.

: I have also read that the 4000 may or may not be nescessary, but I
: have grown up sharpening knives using gradual steps between
: grits, and old habbits are hard to break. Not saying it's right,
: but it's just engrained in me that you have to step up
: gradually.

That's the way I've always done things and I was skeptical, but if you use the Lie-Nielsen method, it works really well with just the two stones.

: Had I not gotten the kit, I still was going to get
: the same grits. One thing I'm worried about is that the 220 is
: going to wear so much faster than the 1000 on the other side,
: but I just didn't want to spend the money for the thicker single
: stones right now.

That's understandable, but when my current stones wear out, I'm probably going to replace them with single-grit stones.

: "Scary Sharp" is working so good for
: me that I started to just get the fine stones to finish up after
: the sandpaper, but couldn't pass up the deal on the kit.

The kit is a good deal, no doubt. If it didn't have a granite surface plate for flattening, I'd get the ceramic stone. I actually bought one from another vendor, but it wasn't flat, so it was useless and I returned it. As it turns out, the 12" x 18" granite surface plate was actually cheaper than the ceramic flattening stone and it's useful for a variety of purposes.
