I had the same idea as was posted here, would rather use a hardwood under the glass for these stems to minimize damage if I hit something. Mine is alternate layers of ash and mahogany, much less waste laminating the stems than cutting them out of a solid piece. Might look at mahogany or perhaps walnut, both are fairly easy to bend and are dark colored woods, walnut being darker.
