Not sure about this model in particular (I'm new to this) but it seems some SOFs are intended to have the heels/toes poke down/up creating bumps in the skin and thus have a relatively slim kayak with more foot room than a hard shell of the same proportions would allow. I personally would not want my feet to have to exert pressure on the skin in any way as after a few minutes I suspect that would cause the same sensation as wearing a shoe a size too small -;) Not to mention the effect on hydrodynamic shape of a bump on the hull...

But I would also not want to scale things uniformly across all dimensions just for more foot-leg room. Idedally it's got to be done in a more "intelligent" way, but rising the foot area only or changing the cockpit shape/angle. If it was me, I'd only change the hull/deck shape/dimensions elsewhere if I had another reason to do it, such as changing the overall displacement or if I were after achieving some particular handling characteristic that is different in the original...

: This is absolutely true. There's an epidemiological study in
: Circumpolar Health that surveyed the height and weight of adults
: in Greenland in the late 60s, and for men the average was 5'
: 4" and 141 lbs. It makes a lot of the issues around
: historic boats very interesting size-wise. It's especially
: interesting that kayaks built for Westerners like the Ken Taylor
: Igdlorssuit kayak around the time of that study are in the same
: size-range as the historic boats. Then- to confuse it all-
: someone posted a while ago after attending a kayak building
: workshop with Maligiaq Padilla that he prefers a kayak 19-20'
: long for ocean paddling. He's scary strong- but he's still only
: about 5' 5" tall. For me, and I think for a lot of people,
: I want to build a replica to see what it paddles like. Just out
: of curiosity. I know it's a lot of work to do something out of
: curiosity, but it's a lot less than a strip or S&G kayak.
