: Just my .02 (and about what it's worth), but I think the scarfed
: joint is less noticeable, gives a nicer cosmetic result. I'd
: like to hear from the folk here who actually know.

A scarf joint done properly will look exactly like a butt joint done correctly. There is still a square edge where one strip ends and the next begins. With either one if you are careful with the wood colors they are very difficult to see, specially if you're not a foot away. You really need to be very close to the finished boat to see any joint at all.

What I do is use a cheap miter box with a pull saw to cut square edges on every strip so there is no gap, I butt join the strips and use a small couple inch long backer piece of strip behind the joint held on with hot glue. Works fine, keeps the edges in alignment and the backer blocks pop off easily once the outside of the hull is glassed. Thanks to Rob Macks for the hot glue idea :)

Scarf joints work just fine too, but they take much more time to join, needs to be done before the strip is used, so adds a considerable amount of time to the stripping process. I'm impatient so like my method better ;)
