: I have just finished my first build so I'm only a rookie. I used a
: mixture of 14' and 10' strips 3/6" thick x 3/4" or
: 3/8"(less the width of the 3mm kerf blade.) All the joints
: were scarfed by holding the ends of two strips together, with a
: 1" thick backing strip, on a rotary disc sander. I tried to
: keep the scarf length to about 1/2" but as each pair was
: cut together, I found it wasn't too critical. I fitted and glued
: one end of each strip in place before fitting and glueing the
: other half, making the scarf joint at the same time, wrapped in
: polythene and clamped.
: I used Titebond 111 and at temperatures around 25c I found if I
: worked from side to side on the boat, I could keep working with
: relatively little thumb twiddling between strips and with some
: care in matching colours the joints are now quite difficult to
: see.
: I think like several of the people posting in this thread, I spent
: ages trouble shooting before I started to build, but once I got
: going it was much quicker than I expected and I just followed my
: nose! I've got a load of strips left over ready for my next
: build.

Btw, I generally prefer 10' to 12' strips, much easier to handle than full length ones. It is nice though, for some designs almost mandatory, to have a few full length strips. Can be scarfed though and I've done that to get full length ones.
