I don't recall which boat forum but one builder described a method using nylon fishing line to retain each layer of strip. Trimmed flush after the build is done, the nylon is invisible. Haven't tried it but it should eliminate staple holes without increasing build time unduly.

My own approach to stapleless building was to cut and mill the strips as I needed them; the time to rip, thickness plane, and scarf a pair of strips allowed the glue on the previously installed pair to set provided they weren't much twisted, since I wasn't using epoxy. However, that was a ribbed boat built without a mold and staples wouldn't have been retained by the softwood ribs.
