If you do not have a lot of paddling experience consider one of the larger multi-chine Sea Tour kayaks. The multi chine designs require a few more Stringers (which are the long pieces of wood), but IMHO have more initial stability. That is a good thing as for your first boat, you do not want to build a tippy one. I have built 3 Yost boats, and I have to say Tom designs great boats, his directions are excellent, plus his price for plans is oh so reasonable.

PS Be warned it is very hard to stop building boats. They are like the Ruffles of Olde, "I best you can't have just one!!"
