Sounds like a bit too much work for a lazy guy like me. I just thin the strips of my hardwood outer stem stock to about 1/8 to 3/32 and laminate the whole thing all in one go with epoxy ... no steam or dry heat bending. I clamp the lamination in place by wrapping several feet of bungee cord around it. A bit messy but quick and works fine.
