I began experimenting over 45 years ago with never tying down the bow / stern of my kayaks.
The result so far has been none of my 40+ kayaks lost. ... Your results may vary :)
I do loop a rope around the coaming and attach it to both bars as a means of stopping the boats from moving fore / aft.

The experiment continues !
