I used to carry a knife (rafting line-cutter (hook-style)) on my PFD , but haven't bothered recently.
I took a clinic last month with Wayne Horodowich, and during the 'equipment and clothing check' before he started the on-water class, Wayne commented that he had never come across a situation in kayaking where a knife would have been required. (That's a lot of hours and experience talking....)

He also made the point that a knife was 'just one more thing to get in the way' when doing a re-entry.

If I were to carry a knife, it would definitely be the hook-style, which reduces the chances of self-mutilation (though you could manage it if you tried...)
