It always pains me when I see people leaning heavily on their paddle while getting in and out of their kayak. Paddles were not designed for that. Practice getting in and out without putting any weight on the paddle. Keep the paddle in the same place for balance, just don't put it in charge of balance, that is your job.

If you glass the shaft but not the blade, you will be transfering that force to the blade and you increase your chance of breaking the blade. But, if you try to make a super-light paddle you should realize that it is probably not as strong as a heavier one and account for that when you use it.
