Thanks for the info. I'd like to know more about magicubes, but I got the general idea.

I seriously doubt you'd save much unless you get an old flash for a 35mm camera at a thrift store or garage sale for really cheap (like $1 - $5). You can go someplace like Walmart, Target, or Kmart and get a commercially available personal strobe that clips to a PFD. Put a small hole in the end of a paddle and tie the light onto it so that you can hold the strobe up above the surface.

Night paddling sounds very relaxing. When I was a kid I had an 8' sailboat (naples sabot) and I loved sailing at night. I used a flashlight shone on the sail for visibility. Some of my best memories include sailing in dense fog at night inside Dana Point harbor before there were more than a few boats in the harbor (ca. 1970).
