How much epoxy to fill the weave?

I'm just finishing up a 9' Kidyak (Glen-L Marine plans) and I'm unsure about how much epoxy is needed to fill the weave in the glass cloth. I've been adding layers with a foam roller and it's taken 5-10 coats before the "checkerboard" pattern of the weave disappears. Do I have to keep coating until this pattern disappears, or will a couple of coats (after applying the glass) suffice?

I suspect that I only need to coat until the low points in the epoxy are higher than the top of the cloth, but I don't know how to tell when I've gotten to that point. I plan to sand smooth and varnish after the weave is filled.

P.S. Sorry if this is a basic question. I searched the archive and couldn't find an answer.

P.P.S. The Kidyak was my warm-up project. Now it's time for the REAL project. There's a Pygmy Osprey Std. kit on it's way in the mail :)
