The max beam of a kayak will be limited by the length of your paddle, and that is limited by your strength and endurance.Too much freeboard, and you are at the mercy of the wind.Length is limited by transport facilities(I carry a 21 double on a Saab, with lots of overhang),and by considerations of mobility and turning.Probably 22 -24 feet are the limits. My double is 30" beam, and can be paddled with 230cm paddles, but will not turn in less than 3-4 boatlengths, using sweep strokes and rudder.Godawful stable ,though, and not slow, once accelerated(a slower process than a single)
