I had the same problem. It is hard to get good results using the Pygmy technique because once you put the piece of thin ply over the joint and apply weight, you can no longer see the joint tape. You may have all kinds of trapped air and wrinkles, but you don't know because its all hidden.
My solution was to use the Pygmy method to butt glue the panels together, but with no tapes. After cure I cleaned the joint and applied the tapes to one side, squeegied them nicely, and then did nothing else (no weights). After that cured, I flipped the panels over and did the tape on the other side.
The disadvantage of my method is that it takes three cures instead of two. Also, since no caul plate is used, you don't end up with a ramp of pure resin to smooth the interface between wood and edge of glass tape. The fairing has to be done later.
The advantage is that you can see the result you are going to get and this result is good.
