Glass workers do the same thing, Nick

When glass is shaped it has all kinds of structural stresses that cause weaknesses when the glass is cooled. To equalize these stresses the glass is placed in a high temperature oven and annealed. Annealing allows the molecular structure to reorganize to a more "rested" state. Same thing with metals of various alloys. It makes sense that this method would work with glassing as well, especially when wood has been forced to assume various unnatural shapes.
