like others have alluded to, either way will be fine, but choosing the way the designer has intitially set it up tho, will save some setup.

(The most important thing above all is that the frame be stiff and rigid - bent and/or wavy is irrelevant.)

for fun as an example, i used both when i had to remove the fragile deck to glass the interior of 'facetious'.

In order to keep the shape of the internally strongbacked build that was ALL(even sheer) stitched and glued together, i then hotglued an external frame right onto the top of the yak just using scrap wood and two 1x4s as a spine. Then cut the yak apart at the sheer with a dozuki and pulled off the hull.

and made one last check to make sure all was keeping shape before lifting off:
