: Actually, what you are proposing would still be considered
: "overbuilt" by some people !

: But go for it. Take some pictures and let us see how the project goes.

Thanks for link to Pat's site. I have seen photos of his boats for years. Always fascinated by them too. Just to many stick ups and deep water here.

I have been surprised that I haven't gotten any negative comments on using the 3mm. Everything has been positive about the idea. Received a couple of emails from people that used 3mm and different sheathings. The more I read the more I realize.. well pretty sure that there is nothing to worry about.

I have decided to go with the 3mm and probably 4 oz cloth on the outside. I think that will give me a boat that is still be (very?) light and yet be durable enough to not have to baby it. I can bump into rocks, scrape the bottom and repeatedly beach on gravel and not do anything but some skins and scraps.

These will be V bottom boats and it will have at least two bulkheads in it. Looking at ideas for a day hatch so there might be a third one. In reality this may be overbuilt for what I will do with it. But it should come out light enough to easily load on the roof. Hopefully the 16' boat will be light enough my niece will be able to handle it by herself.
