Way back when CF was rather new yet someone came up with a comment I remember but could never verify. It went like this.
Carbon fiber only yealds it's strengths when the fiber orientation is within ±7° of the axis where the strength is required. When fiber orientation (I don't know if this means the fibers, the yarns, the woof or weave or what)isn't within specs the CF is no better than an equal amount of 'glass cloth.
When you look at woven sleeving the direction of the yarns is predetermined before you get it. The folks who make it have th the capability to determine the best orientation for the potential uses. When you are faced with a sheet of CF the orientation is up to you and how the best orientation is determined seems a mystery to me.
Even if the above isn't correct I still get the feeling there is more to CF construction than just substituting it for an equal amount of 'glass.
