: hi Chip;
: you might want to think about silver solder
: instead of brazing. silver solder is far stronger, and cleaner to boot.

Happily, I do more woodwork than metalwork.

But, years ago I took a welding class through a local jr. college, and since then I have done some welding and brazing. My experience with welding, or brazing cast iron has simply not been very good. I understand that professionals use a nickel-based, or high nickel content, welding rod for welding castiron automotive motors. I've tried some of those, and they are tricky to play with. Well, maybe tricky is not the right word, but you don't run a bead in exactly the same way with cast iron as you do with mild steel. The material absorbs heat differently, and the metalurgy of cast iron doesn't seem to like the weldign rods I've tried. Probably I could get the hang of it with enough practice, and with enough waste.

Unless you've done a a lot of work on cast iron already, you might want to call around and see if there are any local pros who have worked extensively on cast iron. If it is a small repair, you might get the thing fixed for less than the cost of buying a minimum quantity of the right kind of welding rods.

Just a thought
