I like the idea of the narrower strips. I used 3/4 on the bottom but switched to 1/2 to 7/16 on the sides and deck. These bent easier, and provided a better fit. I did not use any staples but aligned on to the other using a spring clamp on adjoining strips between the stations.

I also used inner tube strips and spring clamps to provide a really tight join. As I did not use cove and bead, this provided only a slight joint to smooth. When I do my next kayak, I plan to use 1/2" max and move to as small as 1/4 where needed.
