When I Built my Rob-Roy I beveled the edges slightly so that the plywood would have a flat to sit on rather than trying to get two points to sit together at the seams.

BUT!!

My suggestion would be to do as the instructions state. Those folks have been doing this for a number of years and must have a reason for what they do and how they do it. When you start drifting off of their plans you may get into situations where you can't get it back to proper alignment.
If you are truely concerned and maybe having difficulty, then I'd contact Pigmy for your answers.

When you have done it that way, you may see something you would like to improve upon, then you may have more confidence to make a change or try an idea.
