I've got three years of constant saltwater use out of my goretex gear and it still works fine. Another benefit of goretex that people often miss is that it can dry even if you are not wearing it. You come home and throw your wet gear over a chair and forget about it for a few days, it will likely dry out. Do that with wet coated nylon and you will soon have a stinky mess.
