: This isn’t a sweeping deck designs, but here is how I do the deck picture
: designs. Lay out the design on deck and cut it out. I file about a 5
: degree taper on the edges. Then put tracing paper over the individual hole
: part and using the edge of a pencil do a pencil rubbing of the edge of the
: hole on the tracing. Cut the tracing paper shape out with scissors, spray
: the back with adhesive and stick it to your wood strip. Cut this wood out
: to the tracing pattern edge with approximately 5 degree taper leaving it
: slightly big. Then start chalking the hole edge with blue chalk and
: fitting (filing & sanding) the wood piece on the chalked area. It
: takes awhile but you can get an exact fit.

My method was similar but different. Where applicable on my deck designs I first stripped the area where the design would be with contrasting wood. Pine in this case. After the glue fully cured I removed the curved panel from the forms. I then stripped the whole deck in WRC. The accent's designs were cut out of the curved panel from approximately the same position as where they would be located on the deck. I also tried to have about a 5 degree draft on the edges. After I had an inlay I was happy with I laid it over the WRC deck and traced around it. After cutting inside of the trace lines I used a file to do the final fitting. A little glue and an inlay was born. It was way easier to do than I had expected and I would do bigger designs the same way.
