Bill i did what you said. I was able to move my seat forward 4" with comfort.
Then i put 5 lbs forward in the bow and launched into 15k winds.
The kayak did just as well as when i had 15 lbs with seat in original position.
Then i removed the 5 lbs to see how it would behave..I was very surprised that the boat behaves as it should with no leecocking unless the skeg is down as desired.
So...the calculations that i should move my seat forward 7 or 8" to simulate a 15 lb increase in the bow was correct...but they did'nt account that my determination that i needed 15 lbs was erroneous because when i used a 15 lb weight..it not only shifted the weight forward..but added Ballast...and i was feeling the effects of ballast stabilization when drawing my conclusions.
In short...if anyone is suffering leecocking...just slide your seat forward
a few inches and then get out in a little wind and observe your boats behavior.
In my boat it was a dramatic difference.
The 15 lbs that i tested with did so add stability as you and Rob pointed out
so i'm thinking about the sand bag game.
: The other possibility is to move yourself forward as much as the coaming will
: allow then put a semi-permanant weight in the bow to compensate for the
: difference. You could leave it there but then you'd have to carry it as
: well as the boat. Most boats do better with a little extra
: "cargo" in them anyway.
