My kayak does not have a deployable skeg or a rudder. It also tends to want to side surf the swells when not moving. I just point my bow or stern into the swell when I stop for a rest. A little properly timed outside edging is all that is needed to maintain course when paddling. Care is required when packing cargo to maintian the neutral trim, about twice as much weight in the rear hatch than in the front hatch.
