this red/green running light will not ruin your night vision if you fold the cover over the top portion of the lense that shines back at you. I've paddled around Annapolis using these and had sailboats say they could see me a long distance away and that they are much brighter than the suction type they use on their inflatable dinghies. More than one boater has asked about them. With three AA lithium batteries it'll burn for days and be very bright.

If you're paddling with friends and they're concerned with having your white aft light ruining their night vision you can mount a bright LED flashlight under the aft deck bungies and shine it onto your pfd. While technically this is not a legal running light it does provide illumination and if you're in an area where being totally lit is a priority I doubt the harbor police/coast guard will cite you. The red/green running lights aren't as blinding.

The Sierra lights you mention aren't worth it IMHO.
