I paddle a pirogue with about a 12 foot waterline. In a head wind bow to stern trim in this boat is very important. If the bow is light any deviation from dead into the wind will cause the boat to try and turn downwind. The boat became a handful to control. I had to remove the portage yoke so I could kneel farther forward.
That's another shortcoming of a short keel. Small deviations in the load center can make big alterations in handling when conditions are not optimal.
Since this only happened to me on rare occasions I let it pass. But on one occasion it got kind of dangerous. Fortunately, I figured out what I had done wrong and pulled the yoke.
Pay attention to handling in various states of wind and sea so you know when it's time to head for shore.

: And a shot of it on the water. I think I am sitting a little too far back.
