Spider cracks come from the over thick gelcoat, it's pretty brittle and any flex in the hull cracks it. No reason to not use chemical strippers, few will have much of an effect on gelcoat. I prefer Star10 but you have to order it online as I've never seen it in stores. One of the citrus stippers would probably work well too.
