To "stir" a bit more (as we have used metrics for years), USA and 3 other countries use the opposite navigation colours and use different VHF marine frequencies from the rest of the world.

The navigation beacon colours was noticeable when we first came into Japanese waters on the (US) yacht we were crewing on. I commented on them and the navigator was surprised, having been navigating by computer. I commented again as we left port and her comment was, "Is the computer wrong?" as it was showing international channel marker colours and the buoys in the harbour were the same colours as the US scheme. The other two countries? Korea and Philippines.

I will admit the fathom was "handy" as it is so easy to measure when using the traditional method rather than an echosounder.

Knots are still used for speed at sea and nautical wind speeds.
