I dunno,
Progress? You mean like gas motors? plastic injection molding.....

I'm taking an online class using one of the more 'modern' forum set-ups and it's harder to find stuff than in my messy shop.
I'm OK with the way the Kayak Forum is now. Searches are a bit tough, but not because Google isn't involved, it's just that there are so many overlapping terms.
In fact the search here works better than anything I can think of except Google (New York Times can't even find an article in the NYTimes from the week before!
Google can. The school district I work seems to be using a search engine created by hallucinating anarchists--they also sent me 30,000 files one day).

I'm sure whatever Nick does will work just fine, and be accompanied by some tasteful bluegrass, or jazz, in any case he'll make it look easy.
Nested subcategories don't work. ( I did try to support the other forums, design and trips--which make this two layers and totally practical. Both could work if a few people
with good information made sure they posted good stuff every week or so to get them going.)

One of the things Edward Tufte "Visual Display of Quantitative Information" points out is that when information is more than three levels deep--it's not accessible.
The Space Shuttle Challenger information was more than six levels deep and everybody got killed. Richard Feynman, and probably Einstein, never went more than
three levels deep (that's why he cleared up the Challenger business and probably why he an Al both got Nobel Prizes. Shouldn't there be one of those for boat building?
