In Response To: Strip: Should I start over? (John Messinger)

: I am building the Guillemot L and have stripped the hull, flipped
: it over and now starting the deck. While working on the hull I
: noticed that in some spots I could not force the twist and bend
: of the strips to match the forms and it would would pull out the
: staples by as much as 4mm particularly in the concave areas of
: form numbers 2, 3, 15 and 16. This will result in a slightly
: less fine of an entry and exit for the water encountering the
: hull. Does anyone have a handle as to whether this will have a
: noticable affect on performance.

: If I am going to saw it all off and start over over, it seems to me
: that this is the time to do it.

: In the attached photo I have placed a headlamp behind the form and
: photographed the light coming through the separation between the
: strips and the form.

I want to post my deep appreciation to all that responded. It went rather well. I wrapped some band clamps around the hull at the problematic forms with some padding at the sheer. Then placed some cedar shake shims in between the band clamps and the hull. I brewed beer at one time and had aquired a 10 gallon pot and a high BTU propane burner. I used this to boil some water under these problematic forms and also heated the inside of the hull with a heat gun until the glue between the strips began to gel. I cranked down on the band clamps, adjusted the shims a bit, heated some more, and then took away the heat. The whole thing took less than an hour and a half. Tonight, I took off the band clamps and viola, it all stayed in place.

Thanks to all for saving me a hundred hours and as many dollars!!!!
