Crazy, I just had this conversation this morning with a wood worker friend.....to use these so called safety devices or not....
35 years ago I bought a used "Beaver" saw. Heavy duty cast with a really bad fence... I have persevered and produced with this saw until four months ago. I went in to a local Canadian Woodworker store to buy a new Biesemeyer fence. Turns out for a little more I could get a new saw... So, I bought a 10" General Cabinet makers saw. It came with all the safety do dads. I knew I wouldn't use the hood but have heard a lot of good things about the riving knife so I put it on.....then I took it off and put in on the shelf. Like others have stated I am aware of the dangers and have tried to develop good habits. My fear is the riving knife will interfere with my tried and true habits..... ( By the way....I love my new saw...should have had it years ago...now I make really nice saw dust....)
I read a long time ago that "A modicum of paranoia beats any safety system".....I might have read that on this forum....
On another note I took the guard off my small angle grinder because it was getting in the way. Yesterday I gave myself a nice gash in my left index finger....once I got the bleeding under control..... I put the guard back on.....:)
