Yes black can be hard to see in the waves, "but" the contrast between a black bottom and almost any other color is easy to see and in waves someone looking will be able to see the line between the bottom and the sides easily. That contrasting line stands out against the fluid shapes in waves.

On my test boat for the graphite coating, it's an old NDK Greenlander, the hull and deck is bright yellow so when upright it's very visible, when upside down though it's got a black bottom and bright yellow below that. Very visible even when upside down.
