Greenland paddle

Hi, this question has probably been answered before but I have tried searching the BB and cannot find an answer.
I have built a Greenland paddle ( Chuck Holst design ) out of laminated cedar. The only finish I used was linseed oil. The weight is 2 lbs exactly. I intend to do river/lake touring, nothing too strenuous, but I'm now worried that the paddle is not strong enough and will break easily. Should I beef it up with glass cloth ?? Or should I have included a stronger wood ( fir/ash/etc ) in the laminate ??
I intend making more paddles, so maybe I'll get it right the next time !!
Thanks in advance for any help.
