I've madd a few Greenland paddles out of a solid piece of cedar and they all are holding up very well. I just brush on a single coat of epoxy and wipe it down with a rag so that all epoxy not penetrating the wood is removed. I also have not applied any finish at all to some of them, and they are also holding up well. I don't like a smoothe surface on the paddle, it becomes to slippry for me when wet.
