I use red cedar driftwood for paddles lots of it on the beach free. No breaks yet 5 years of regular use. Made one out of sitka spruce tree from my yard and it is a good paddle. There are plenty of other woods just as good as sitka spruce , use what is local and available.
Some folks like douglas fir... especially those over 200lbs who need to lose some flab ;>]
