The problem around here is that commercial fishing vessels aren't particulary big. In fact, they can be down right small. Many are under 20 feet. Probably all of them are under 100 feet. After all, this is just the Chessapeake and its rivers. To make it more difficult, many of those commercial fishing boats that only have right of way when working look exactly like any other open power boat. If you really are up on the vessel numbering system, you can tell if they are commercial by the number, but you still can't tell if they're working without looking closely. What annoys the heck out of the commercial people is that even with all the hand waving and yelling and pointing to nets and such, sail boaters still come charging across, yelling that they've got right of way because they've got sails.

As a kayak related note, mine might just become Marylands smallest commercial working boat at this rate. The DNR is determined to charge me taxes and force me to mount vessel ID numbers before issuing me a hull ID number, in spite of the Coast Guard's prohobition of this. I found out that home made commercial fishing boats don't have to pay taxes. And, truthfully, my 'yak would work well out there for catching peeler crabs. I can get up into the areas they hide, where larger boats cannot. So I may end up working for my wife yet!
