:These changes were basically to vertically line up each set of control points

Sounds like you are in good shape now!

A few comments on what you just said:

As the control points are shape or curve generators, in the ideal sense they should be placed where they make the most sense for shaping the curve. Lining them up vertically is an incorrect artifact that they have something to do with the usual vertical stations that we build from. The point curve generator locations have nothing to do with station locations or with vertical or any repetitive alignment process (aside from say perpendicular sections from an average curved reference spine in a simply shaped body). the program generates the stations from the surface however it is shaped by point location.

Now our kayaks are usually so simple that it just does not matter, so this is not much of an issue - however for quick sketches or really curvaceous areas, it helps.

And if you are careful, you CAN have free and unconnected points in order to follow desired shapes closely – you just have to analyze a bit, put them in places where shape change is small, or leave them where makes most sense and just seam to adjacent pts – ie take steps if things are getting a little wonky. You’ll probably find this out when you get to the cockpit location – you’ll have to add pts in the sheer that probably stay unconnected to the other hull panels – but then each point you add will change the sheer and you will have to stay on top of the changes so that you still have good sheer curves and of course, dev panels. Etc etc etc – the technical process of making the program work for you.

Onward, forward and beyond!
