Yes, that's the way it works. But, I think that's the way it's supposed to work.

The idea of using controlpoints is not to get real dimensions from the points but to get shape calculated from them. I see the controlpoints as magnets that are pulling the surface. The more points or magnets you add the closer the surface will be to controlpoints. If the surface is at controlpoint, then the point is not doing anything for the shape. Idea of using controlpoints is to create flowing, smooth shapes.

So it should be remembered that controlpoints should not be looked too much. Actually they usually are distracting so its better to look the hull with controlpoints visibility set to off.

When I'm reproducing the kayak models from images, I import the pics as backround images. Then I move controlpoints until the surfaces/corners are in right place. So I'm not using control curves, but "control images". My models are made quite fast and I haven't used too much effort to get the shapes tuned. And I think I should add my models are not made to be developable - just to create the shape.

Stuff is here;

Btw. Naval engineer and designer J.Mertens from Bateau tested Freeship. He said the controlpoint-system is similar to "real" boat/ship designing software he uses in his work. Actually he did recommend Freeship. Altough he did state that some panels may show developable that are not and some panels might show problems that are developable in reality.

Toni.

: The original shape is ‘better’ – ie much more readily faired as you say. But
: that shape will be more irrevocably changed if you add a crease
: intersection to one of those originally few gorgeous points.

: Like lets take a stupid example of a creased chine or edge being defined by 3
: points – bow, ctr and stern. And then for some reason, you intersect a
: panel right at the ctr point. I don’t have freeship loaded to check it,
: but I bet that nice original curve now is a triangle. No more curve, way
: wider than it was before. I bet the curve jumps 2 or more inches.

: To account for the intersection and to try and get back shape, you have to
: remember where the curve was originally and exactly move the intersection
: point to touch that curve (hence using markers), and then you have to add
: at least a point on each side of the intersection point to try and get the
: triangle to start behaving like a curve.
