: Thanks guys. I could make do with what I have: Silicon Carbide paper and a
: handful of water stones. I guess it would be nice to have a low speed
: grinder of some kind. Any recommendations? It looks like Woodcraft has
: some for right around $100 - that's probably the best route.

: It's funny you both mentioned a treadle/foot power. I saw a treadle lathe on
: the Woodrights Shop and have thought it's a cool idea ever since.

Chip,

Either of the two "cheaper" low speed grinders listed in the Woodcraft Cat. are probably the way to go. I would opt for the "cheaper" one speed model (probably will order same 2day). I would also order the higher grade white wheels (120 grit) on the next page. Some advice: do not toss out your old grey wheels - use them for the more mundane tasks in your shop - like sharping lawnmower blades, etc - the white wheels are too expensive for that kind of work. Also buy a cheap diamond dressing tool for the white wheels (only).

FWIW years ago I made a grinding system from wood, mandrel, pulleys, and a motor (1725rpm) from a wasted washing machine. It is still in use today, and it has served me well. I also made up and adjustable rest from wood - nothing very fancy but far better than most stock tool rests. I don't use this "made" rest much anymore unless I am grinding something wider than usual (most of my grinding today is on lathe tools.) I usually grind to a good edge, follow this with carbide paper on glass, waterstones, and then hone - so the new machine will be grind only, the old - hone only. Will give more versatility.

Regards,

Leo S.

PS

Have never enjoyed stationary bikes so I prob would not enjoy a treadle lathe.
I like the easy speed changes of the modern lathes. I do find the treadle types historically interesting tho (but need to wonder about the very real possiblity of blacking out well before reaching 2500-3000rpm. Bad thing to do next to a madly whirling lathe!:)
