In Response To: Strip: Narrower Strips (Mike Hanks)

: I know of some people who have used narrower strips (Pete Rudie I think). How
: narrow are they. I have also heard that you can apply multiple strips at a
: time with the narrower ones. Any ideas or comments?

many areas of my yak have multiple strips(70-80)between 1/16in to 1/8 in wide by the typical 1/4inor so deep. i have experience here!

because they are so thin, they are very floppy and so you could/can do a bunch at a time. the two main problems are keeping the form of the yak(use backing boards) and stopping the little strips from flopping over if you use compound curves(and why the heck not with those nice little curvy strips)

the technique i evolved was to use a ply backers between the forms(others do this) but staple over or BESIDE the thin strips and jam from there. using the staples as forms or feeders for where i wanted the strips to go. used many little wedges from offsets.

the hot technique would have been if the backer boards were repeatedly drilled with 1/4in holes, dowels inserted in nearest holes all along, and then jammed over from there. with the jamming, you can more readily control the flopping over so you won't get staircasing which is a major issue here. i found myself using many many wedges and 1" spring clamps upside down and right side up. these are great at keeping the little bundles togther or wedged. the joints get very tight.

so support under and sideways as they are so minimal.
