: Hi,

: I'm new to this forum. I'm just finishing my 3rd S&G boat project, and after
: reading Morris' book I've become very interested in building a SOF
: Greenland kayak. I know the book suggests using Sitka Spruce, but is kind
: of vague on what other woods are acceptable. Doug Fir is the most
: available in my neck of the woods and air-dried is hard to come by.

: I'm wondering if some of you SOF builders can share some of the woods you've
: used for your frames, what you learned from it and where it's really
: important to use air-dried or green vs. kiln dried.

: Thanks,
: Kellan

I used Port Orford cedar for the gunwales and Cypress for the deck beams and stringers. African mahogany for the keel.

You can use a lot of different kind of woods. Stay away from anything that easily rots.

Morris has overstated ribs. You can go a lot narrower, especially if you are using a hardwood like white oak (excellent).

(I’m the tall one. Jim is who is standing beside me is who we are building the kayak for.)
