Other: internal sock

I've seen some forms of kayaks (most often folders) that list an internal 'sock' that the paddler sits in and I'm curious about the effectiveness of this device.
I presume it would go a long way toward keeping the rest of the innards dry. Would it also help in removing water from the kayak after it's been swamped?
