I'm a relative novice on this subject, but I had heard Rogers' building 'book' was quite complete, his instructions highly detailed. That said, I'm surprised he'd recommend such a beefy fillet.

I've also read the first boat you build will generally be the heaviest - I'm hoping to cut the weight on my second by ten pounds! Congrats on being ahead of the curve. (the recommendations you've received sure sound spot on.)
