I'm still hazy on how the axle fits into the compression fitting, etc. So, your 6mm plastic rod is loosely embedded in the epoxy blob on the one side? On the fitting side, what does the compression fitting seal against? A short piece of the cable tube? But, how does the 6mm rod seal to that... or something?

I can see how the control box should be pretty easy, using tubing and compression fittings at both ends. WRT securing a knob to the cable, one way might be to have an aluminum knob, tapped for a SS set screw (if such thing exists; this might be another item from the yacht supply). I'm guessing you'd prefer a wooden knob, so not sure how to secure to cable.

Do you have any thoughts on what I had mused about on another thread: a non-foiled skeg made to almost blend with the hull, to minimize turbulence when not in use... whether there's any value (or problems) to that, particularly if one hopes or expects to not use the skeg much?
